Comprehension Questions for Jharkhand B. Ed Entrance Exam 2022

Comprehension

PASSAGE

Men who are always grumbling about their poverty complaining of their difficulties, whinning over their troubles, and thinking that their lot in this world is mean and poor will never get any happiness out of life or achieve any success.

However mean our life may be, if we face it bravely and honestly and try to make the best of it, we shall find that after all it is not so bad as we thought, and we may have our time of happiness and the joys of success. There is nothing common or unclean, until we make it so by the wrong attitude we adopt towards it.

People moan about poverty as a great evil, and it seems to be an accepted belief that if people only had plenty of money, they would be happy and useful and get more out of life.

As a rule, there is more genuine satisfaction in life and more obtained from life in the humble cottage of the poor man than in palaces of the rich. I always pity the sons and daughters of rich men, who are attended by servants and have governesses at a later age, and the same time I am glad to think that they do not know what they have missed.

It is the height of a selfishness for men, who fully appreciate in their own case the great advantages of a good education, to deny these advantages to women. There is no valid argument by which the exclusion of the female sex from the privilege of education can be defended. It is argued that women have their domestic duties to perform and that, if they were educated, they would bury themselves in their booksand have little time for attending to the management of their households.

Happy is the man who acquires the habit of reading when he is young. He has secured a life-long source of pleasure, instruction and inspiration. So long as he has his beloved books, he need never feel lonely. He always has a pleasant occupation of leisure moment, so that he need never feel bored. He is the possessor of wealth more precious than gold.

According to a Greek legend, a man had a wife named Pandora. There was no other woman on earth at that time. She had a box given by Jupiter, king of the gods. Within it were shut up all the good fairies who make men happy Pandora did not know this, but she was asked never to look into the box. One day her curiosity got the better of her, and she lifted the lid, all fairies came out and flew away. Only the sweet fairy of hope was left when Paridora closed the box but all the others were lost to mankind for ever.

Frenzy overtook him. There were stones under his heel, he picked them up and with all his strength hurled them at his tormentors. Two or three were struck and ran away yelling, and so formidable did he appear that the rest became panic stricken. Cowards, like a jeering crowd in the presence of an exasperated man, they brode up and fled. Left alone, the little thing without a father set off running towards the fields, for a recollection had been awakened which nerved his soul to a great determination.

Will though he never heard anything like this, and he kept on asking question after question about the world that lay away down the river, with all its perils and marvels, until the old miller became quite interested himself, and at last took him by the hand and led him to the hill-top that overlooks the valley and the plain.

The sun was near setting, and hung low down in a cloudless sky. Everything was defined and glorified in golden light. Will had never seen so great an expanse of country in his life, he stood and gazed with all his eyes.

In despair she had dropped the subject for the time, only to renew it at the first opportunity. I became impatient at her repeated attempts and seizing the new doll, I dashed it upon the floor. I was keenly delighted when I felt the fragments of the broken doll at my feet. Neither sorrow nor regret followed my passionate outburst. I had not loved the doll. In the still dark world in which I lived there was no strong sentiment or tenderness.

Our world has a heritage of culture and beauty, but unfortunately we have been handing on this heritage only to the less active and important members of each generation. The government of the world, by which I do not mean its ministerial posts but its key positions of power, has been allowed to tail into the hands of men ignorant of the past, without tenderness towards what is traditional, without understanding what they are destroying. There is no essential lesson why should be the case. To prevent is an educational problem, and not a very difficult one.

So wonderfully is the aeroplane shaped that in fight it will largely take care of itself. It always wants to do the right thing, whatever is necessary to keep itself flying. Many people think the piloting is a balancing stunt, much like walking tight rope. Actually the art of piloting consists of about nine tenth of doing nothing and trusting the aeroplane. Many people think that on the slightest lapse of the pilot's attention an aeroplane will go into a spin. Actually a stall or spin is brought on only by heavy misuse of the controls.
